Technology provides many people with the opportunity to interact with one another. But does that mean everyone uses it? Unfortunately, not everyone has the ability to take advantage of using technology. Because of socioeconomic status, disabilities, and physical location (among other factors), these opportunities are not equally available to all students (Ribble, 2015).
Some Digital Access Issues to keep in mind:
- Some students may or may not have access to technology
- Some students may need accommodations and assistance when using technology
What is Assistive Technology?
Survey
Many students are unaware of Assistive Technology and aren't even sure what it really is. A group of seventh grade students at Voorhees Middle School were asked to take a survey about their knowledge of Assistive Technology. The survey and the results can be found below.

The survey was completed by 51 seventh graders. The results of the survey show that the majority of the students felt the use of technology helps them learn. With the 1:1 iPad initiative at Voorhees Middle School, students are allowed to take the iPads home to complete their assignments. The survey also indicated that students were familiar with the term Assistive Technology and even knew many accessibility tools, including the Zoom feature, available on their devices. The link below provides more detailed information and full survey results from each student.
